Go here to help Arthur!

Yesterday we made a plea for help. Some folks wanted to know more details about what’s going on with us, why we’re in danger of shutting down, and why we need help. I apologize for not making that information available in our initial appeal. Here’s why Arthur needs help right now: One year ago I ran up my credit cards and borrowed money from friends and family in order to buy out my ex-partner in Arthur. Since then I have maxed out my personal and business credit cards to service that debt and to start up publication of Arthur again. We have worked very hard with very little resources: some of us could afford to work pro bono, others could afford to work at well below market, still others couldn’t afford to work for Arthur but did it anyway. Still, we have bills to pay, and debt to service. Starting up again costs money. And my credit cards are now maxed out. On the heels of lower than expected ad sales (although they are trending up), increased production and distribution costs (higher quality printing and paper, higher fuel costs, increased printrun), and an “under-performing non-magazine product” (the Living Theatre dvd, for which we’ve sold less than 25% of the printrun since launch, received zero reviews or notices, etc), spiraling debt service payments (now $2k a month) on startup costs, and most importantly, zero new financial backers… we’ve finally reached the point where WE HAVE NO MORE MONEY. If we don’t obtain at least $20k by July 1, ARTHUR is done. Our long-term prospects are good if we are fortunate enough to make it through this rough patch. Since our initial appeal yesterday afternoon, we’ve received over $12,000 in donations and pledges. We will keep the arthurmag.com website updated as regularly as we can with our progress. All of us involved with Arthur are extremely grateful for the generosity we’ve been showered with so far, and very moved by the many notes (sometimes letters!) of support we’ve already received. Thank you so much. All best, Jay Babcock Arthur Magazine

All 26 episodes of the Hell Girl anime are coming to IFC!

Most episodes are one shoters about someone getting their comeuppance. If someone submits your name to the revenge website, your number is up! This little series spawned a DS game and a live action TV show I wouldn’t recommend, but all in all from what I’ve seen an anime worth checking out.

The NHM has been putting on a free lecture/concert series the first Friday of every month since January. They ended the series June 9th with a lecture about the parallel evolution of apes and dolphins and a concert with the Annuals and the Mountain Goats. I grabbed my eight year old son Bodie and a camera as soon as I found out. The natural history museum looked all jazzed up with mod lighting patterns playing off the walls and drink stations set up against the backdrop of well lit stuffed African Mammals.

We started our evening taking the last tour of the marine hall before reconstruction begins. The seventies silt that rests over the hall begs for updating, but I still dig the fonts. We were given a tour led by the slightly nervous phd.jpg Regina Wetzer, Ph.D. who talked knowledgeably about marine life, interdependencies, etc. but I mainly remember 3 things from it.
1. There are thousands (millions?) of tiny creatures who live in the sand. So there’s that to think about next time I go to the beach. I can snuggle into the warm cozy give of accommodating little lifeforms in their sandy ecosystem, and hope even harder that I don’t get sand in uncomfortable places.

2. This guy

who’s longer than I could fit in the frame without a telephoto lens and looks like a really cute eel. I guess these guys really do live in our pacific ocean but only come to the surface when they’re dieing. Love the orange frill. Read the rest of this entry »

From Oscar-wining director Alex Gibney and producer Graydon Carter comes a probing look into the uncanny life of national treasure and gonzo journalism inventor Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. A fast moving, wildly entertaining documentary with an iconic soundtrack, the film addresses the major touchstones in Thompson’s life-his intense and ill fated relationship with the Hell’s Angels, his near-successful bid for the office of sheriff in Aspen in 1970, the notorious story behind the landmark Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, his deep involvement in Senator George McGovern’s 1972 presidential campaign, and much more. Narrated by Johnny Depp.

Our new favorite band. Seen by chance. Remembered forever. What can I say besides watching this band is a genuine experience and I’m glad I was there.
