I have read way to many articles on cow fart lately. In Popular Science this week they had an article stating we should put garlic in the grass to stop the polluting bovines.
Here is at least something positive coming from out of cows stomachs.
From Unknown Country:
No, we won’t be propelling our cars of the future on gases derived from the rear ends of cows. Cows have 4 compartments in their stomachs. that the fluid in the largest compartment, the one that breaks down cellulose, may be used to break down the cellulose in corn and turn it into ethanol.
Researcher Rismani-Yazdi has designed a 2-compartment fuel cell that mimics a cow’s stomach. One compartment contains cellulose and rumen fluid from a cow’s stomach—which contains bacteria. As the bacteria attack the cellulose, it produces electrons which flow into the 2nd compartment as electric current. In LiveScience.com, Andrea Thompson quotes him as saying, “Energy is produced as the bacteria break down cellulose, which is one of the most abundant resources on our planet.”
He and his team started working on their battery design 4 years ago and have now reduced it to a quarter of its original size, although it produces 3 times the power of the original model. It creates enough electricity to recharge an AA battery, which is infinitely rechargeable, according to Yazi, “as long as we keep feeding the bacteria with cellulose.”
No where on here does it state how bad the batteries are going to smell…..

Tim Roth is to play Hulks protagonist in the new movie set for release next year. Thats right folks, there is actually going to be a bad guy! Tim Roth is gonna play Abomination, which is just a foreign version of hulk that can’t turn back into his human self. I’m still not completely sold on this movie yet. Give me some screen shots and trailer and we’ll talk(please?).
More info at Marvel.
Also they have a new contest up where you could be in an upcoming movie which is highly unlikely for anyone except for some likely shmooe…(did I spell that right?) But what seems possible is the 3rd prize, a year subscription to Amazing Spiderman, Iron man, and Fantastic four.

*Here’s an update thanks to Harper’s weekly. I have few fixations– Harper’s and honeybees are two.
Researchers investigating the collapse of honeybee colonies in Europe and the Americas identified several possible reasons for the catastrophe: poor diet; radiation from mobile phones that disturbs bees’ sense of navigation so they cannot fly home; increased solar radiation due to the thinning of the ozone layer; bee AIDS; stress from cross-country travel in trucks; falling queen fertility; the microsporidian fungus Nosema ceranae; or imidacloprid, a pesticide sold under the brand name Gaucho and banned by France in 1999 for spreading “mad bee disease.”
*And just in case we forgot about what was really important:
Investors were advised to put their money in gold and corn futures to profit off the recession that may result from the disruption of the food chain caused by the vanishing bees.
*And, whether scientist or theologian– we can all agree the world will end soon.
Grapes, which self-pollinate, and olives, which are pollinated by the wind, will not be affected by the bees’ disappearance; Christians pointed out that the Book of Revelation predicts that a famine sparing grapes and olives will precede the apocalypse.

This months Wired has a neat article about a company called Timbuk2. They are trying to make long lasting tote bags from used plastic bags. The company has been around since 1994 and although this new venture isn’t ready for orders they do have custom tote bags you can build yourself!
“for now, the process is too labor-intensive for mass-market production. Timbuk2 can make only a handful of Lamitron bags on any given day — far fewer than the 450 or so Cordura or ballistic nylon totes it typically cranks out. But that’s OK, Klebahn says: Hipsters love limited editions; the masses will follow.”
Read the article here.
But what I really want is this onion tote!

maybe they’ve just forgotten their dance steps and don’t know how to find eachother. Poor little bees. Here’s a much more educated analysis of the situation.

Nothing really gives me more hope for the future than new and creative GREEN technologies. (Even new born babies come a distant second.)
The bioStream is a “Tidal energy conversion system” and based on a shark tail!
“The motions, mechanisms, and caudal fin hydrofoil shapes of such species have been optimised by natural selection and are known to be up to 90% efficient at converting body energy into propulsive force.
The bioSTREAM™ mimics the shape and motion characteristics of these species but is a fixed device in a moving stream. In this configuration the propulsion mechanism is reversed and the energy in the passing flow is used to drive the device motion against the resisting torque of the O-DRIVE™ electrical generator.
Due to the single point of rotation, this device can align with the flow in any direction, and can assume a streamlined configuration to avoid excess loading in extreme conditions. Systems are being developed for 500kW, 1000kW and 2000kW capacities to match conditions in various locations.” Says BioPowerSystems.
