From Oscar-wining director Alex Gibney and producer Graydon Carter comes a probing look into the uncanny life of national treasure and gonzo journalism inventor Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. A fast moving, wildly entertaining documentary with an iconic soundtrack, the film addresses the major touchstones in Thompson’s life-his intense and ill fated relationship with the Hell’s Angels, his near-successful bid for the office of sheriff in Aspen in 1970, the notorious story behind the landmark Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, his deep involvement in Senator George McGovern’s 1972 presidential campaign, and much more. Narrated by Johnny Depp.

A couple of things here. First, here is the new poster for the 7th annual Lebowski Fest.

On December 4th of this year, Sigur Ros released their documentary Heima. As quoted from their site:

“‘heima’ is sigur rós’s first ever film, filmed over two weeks last summer when the band undertook a series of free, unannounced concerts in iceland. they hauled 40-plus people round 15 locations to the furthest flung corners of their homeland for their debut venture into live film, to create something, well, inspirational.”

HeimaKnown for their ambient sounds and sweeping epics, their “slower is better” technique has made them one of Icelands most celebrated exports (take a step back Bjork).

The DVD can be purchased online through the website here.
In addition, they’ll be screening the movie at local theaters…a once in a lifetime event to be sure.

From the press release:

Combining both the biggest and smallest shows of their career, the entire tour was filmed, and now provides a unique insight into one of the world’s most fascinating and inscrutable bands captured live while exploring their natural habitat like never before. Playing in deserted fish factories, outsider art follies, far-flung community halls, sylvan fields, darkened caves and the huge horseshoe-shaped Asbyrgi canyon (formed, legend has it, by the hoofprint of Odin’s six-legged horse Sleipnir), the band reached an entirely new spectrum of the Icelandic population; young and old, ardent and merely quizzical, entirely by word-of-mouth.

Cinema Sage - Life lessons from the silver screen - 1 - The Last Dragon

Do you remember the end of The Last Dragon? Where Sho’nuff kept asking Bruce Leeroy who’s the master? Were you even watching? Did you learn nothing from Bruce? The entire movie Bruce Leeroy fought through obstacles and got his ass kicked in order to help you understand that you are the master as well. You might have watched the movie and thought “What a fool that Bruce Leeroy was….I knew he was the master the whole time.” But here you are, and you are stuck in traffic, and little do you know life is asking you quietly…Who’s the master? You might be deciding between burger king or sushi for lunch, gauging which one will make your belly look less fat, and that’s life asking again……Who’s the master? You get over-charged in some erroneous phone bill and that’s life dunking your head in water asking Who’s the master? Cancer strikes and there is no one there but you and life screaming Who’s the master?!

I am.

A quick exercise: (This works every time.) Start up a conversation about The last dragon at work or at school with a friend or chum and later in the day walk by and ask “Who’s the master?” Your friend will say “Sho’nuff” and that is what I’m talking about. Your friend should be saying “I am.”, you should be saying I am, but instead we automatically put ourselves in the position of Sho’nuff’s lackey’s by saying his name. This attitude needs to stop! (if your friend didn’t say Sho’nuff they have already read this and are messing with you. If they didn’t say anything then that wasn’t your friend)

This week you need to examine your life and let us know who the Sho’nuff in your life. When you wake tomorrow, I want you to think “Who’s the master?” close your eyes and say “I am“. Take a deep breathe, open your eyes and say it louder “I am.”. Do this right before you exit your vehicle when you arrive at work or school and once more on your way home. The odd thing is that even if you do the mockingly the more you do it the more you will start to see a change in your life. This ain’t no sucka motivational speech, this is the real deal. This is the first step to a more master like you. You might not glow, but your attitude about everyday activities will start to change.

Life is nothing but possibilities and when you push out thoughts of change and control in your life long enough they won’t come back on their own. You need to do things to remind your self that you are in control and have a say so in everyday activities. At first you might need to do it in a silly way, like saying “Who’s the master” to yourself while no one is looking and that is ok. You will soon regain your youthful, positive, and “in control” outlook that has some how slipped away.

This is your Cinema Sage saying “You sure look like a master to me.”
