Go here to help Arthur!

Yesterday we made a plea for help. Some folks wanted to know more details about what’s going on with us, why we’re in danger of shutting down, and why we need help. I apologize for not making that information available in our initial appeal. Here’s why Arthur needs help right now: One year ago I ran up my credit cards and borrowed money from friends and family in order to buy out my ex-partner in Arthur. Since then I have maxed out my personal and business credit cards to service that debt and to start up publication of Arthur again. We have worked very hard with very little resources: some of us could afford to work pro bono, others could afford to work at well below market, still others couldn’t afford to work for Arthur but did it anyway. Still, we have bills to pay, and debt to service. Starting up again costs money. And my credit cards are now maxed out. On the heels of lower than expected ad sales (although they are trending up), increased production and distribution costs (higher quality printing and paper, higher fuel costs, increased printrun), and an “under-performing non-magazine product” (the Living Theatre dvd, for which we’ve sold less than 25% of the printrun since launch, received zero reviews or notices, etc), spiraling debt service payments (now $2k a month) on startup costs, and most importantly, zero new financial backers… we’ve finally reached the point where WE HAVE NO MORE MONEY. If we don’t obtain at least $20k by July 1, ARTHUR is done. Our long-term prospects are good if we are fortunate enough to make it through this rough patch. Since our initial appeal yesterday afternoon, we’ve received over $12,000 in donations and pledges. We will keep the arthurmag.com website updated as regularly as we can with our progress. All of us involved with Arthur are extremely grateful for the generosity we’ve been showered with so far, and very moved by the many notes (sometimes letters!) of support we’ve already received. Thank you so much. All best, Jay Babcock Arthur Magazine

In 1968 The Living Theatre, led by Julian Beck and Judith Malina, triumphantly returned to America from years of self-imposed exile in Europe with their theatrical breakthrough Paradise Now. The play introduces the practice of collective creation, dissolving the boundaries of human interactions and forging a harmony between the actors and audience. Of this process, Julian Beck writes, “Collective creation is the secret weapon of the people… This play is a voyage from the many to the one and from the one to the many. It’s a spiritual voyage and a political voyage, a voyage for the actors and the spectators. The play is a vertical ascent toward permanent revolution, leading to revolutionary action here and now. The revolution of which the play speaks is the beautiful, non-violent, anarchist revolution. The purpose of the play is to lead to a state of being in which non-violent revolutionary action is possible.”

The result of this shared voyage is the spontaneous creation of a temporary anarchist collective- free from the enslavements of war, violence, the State, money and the self.

Founded in 1947, The Living Theatre has staged more than 80 productions performed in eight languages in 25 countries on four continents - a unique body of work. Visit their new space on Clinton St. in NYC - more info:www.livingtheatre.org

These aren’t autonomous robots, of course (so begone, you Terminator nightmares, at least for now). They’re standard-issue remote-controlled machines like Foster-Miller’s low-to-the-ground Talon, which has been put to good use in dangerous places for less-aggressive duties such as finding and neutralizing roadside bombs. That means a human operator well versed in the rules of engagement would make the actual decision on whether to shoot.

Talon…”begone, you Terminator nightmares“, says you! Where’s the microchip hidden…when do they do away with the first law, why are we showing them how to pull the trigger!

I get worried when my first person shooter adversary in my consoles games learns the virtue of patience. No more waiting for them to calm down and walk causually around the corner as if they didn’t hear the explosion. If they can do it in Half Life 2, we’re only a half-skip away from bleeding out while hearing Flight of the Conchords play the exit music.

This allows me to segue into the new Bionic Woman, which premiers on Wednesday, September 26th. While certainly more high budget than something you might see on Sci-Fi, they’ve done an effective job of at least convincing me to watch the pilot, as they’ve marketed heavily to my demographic. They were at the comic-con, they’re all over the internet, they’re on the pre-previews at the theater. I get it. Bionic Woman is coming out…chill out with the marketing dollars.

Kidding aside…hug your children. It’s all over.

Isn’t this how George Romero’s films start…

Why are we playing with fire!!

An 8-million-year-old bacterium that was extracted from the oldest known ice on Earth is now growing in a laboratory, claim researchers.

If confirmed, this means ancient bacteria and viruses will come back to life as ice melts due to global warming. This is nothing to worry about, say experts, because the process has been going on for billions of years and the bugs are unlikely to cause human disease.

Unlikely you say? Have you even read Andromeda Strain! Put it back before people start coughing up black goo, hearing techno music, and killing their pets!
